My ultimate question to ask when being interviewed

It’s not always easy when you’re trying to think of what to ask in that awkward bit of the interview when they turn to you and say “Do you have any questions?”

You panic and wonder what they want to hear, and start sweating because you think you might ask something profoundly terrible like “So… where did you get that tie?”

Don’t fear. I have one ultimate question to ask that is guaranteed to impress.

Ask: “What motivated you to join the business, and what stops you leaving?” (yes, it’s a two-for-one)

This is a question that they probably don’t often hear, and one that will get them chewing over a decent answer. It will also give you a good insight into the company as you’ll hopefully get an honest reply.

You can also do a bit of LinkedIn homework and find out the company they used to work with, ask what made them leave there. Throw that into the ring. That’s not for everyone, it’s quite a flex, but if you feel comfortable doing that then go for it. Chances are they’ll have seen you eye them up on LinkedIn anyway…

Find out their motivations for joining and why they stayed.

Ask this in an interview and let me know how you get on.
